The NetZeroAICT project is a major European Horizon Europe initiative aimed at transforming CT-scan diagnostics. In this international collaboration, hospitals, universities, and technology partners work together on advanced AI solutions that enhance both the quality and sustainability of CT imaging.
AI as an alternative to Contrast Agents
The main goal of NetZeroAICT is to develop AI technology that can replace iodine-based contrast agents in CT scans through digital image enhancement. This innovation offers three key benefits:
More sustainable & cost-efficient
By reducing or replacing contrast agents and potentially lowering radiation dose, the AI-driven approach contributes to more environmentally friendly and cost-effective diagnostic imaging.
Improved patient safety
Avoiding contrast agents provides a safer and more comfortable alternative for patients.
Supported by European research
The project is funded by the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation programme (grant agreement No 101136679) and UK Research and Innovation.

The Role of Z-Visie in this AI Innovation Project
Although Z-Visie is not listed as an official project partner, the organisation is closely connected through a key member of the team:
Dr Erik R. Ranschaert – Work Package Leader
Radiologist, AI project leader and Guest Professor at Ghent University, Dr Erik R. Ranschaert is part of the Z-Visie team and serves as Work Package Leader within NetZeroAICT. He is responsible for the development and clinical validation of innovative AI technologies. His activities align directly with Z-Visie’s expertise:
AI implementation & advisory: Within Z-Visie, Dr Ranschaert guides organisations in the responsible and sustainable application of AI in medical imaging, fully in line with the vision behind NetZeroAICT.
Consultancy in workflow & innovation: Z-Visie provides advice on digital innovation, workflow optimisation and the integration of AI applications, including through collaborations with Diagnose.me, where Dr Ranschaert serves as Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board.
Summary
Dr Ranschaert’s contribution to NetZeroAICT highlights Z-Visie’s role as a trusted expert at the intersection of radiology, healthcare management and AI innovation. The project demonstrates how sustainable, safe and high-quality diagnostics become possible when clinical expertise and technological innovation come together.
